Malting news USA: International Malting Co. to get an annual discount of USD150,000 on wastewater

The Winona City Council will vote July 17 on giving a deep discount to the city’s biggest user of the wastewater treatment plant, Winona Daily News posted July 17.

International Malting Co., formerly known as Froedtert, would save $150,000 or 18 percent a year on its annual sewer bill, if the council approves a new agreement the company has requested.

The plant at 500 W. Third St. sends an average of 850,000 gallons of untreated waste water each working day to the treatment plant, which processes it and pumps it into the Mississippi River. Under the agreement, the company would pay a lower rate for its average usage, but face steeper surcharges on larger volumes.

The city says the discount won’t severely strain the sewer fund, which it uses to pay for water and sewer infrastructure, as well as other capital improvements.

IMC has requested lower rates for several years and argued that Winona’s rates should be lowered, though city sewer rates are a comparative bargain. City users pay between 30 percent and 40 percent less than those in Minnesota cities such as Faribault and Albert Lea, and nearly 50 percent less than Red Wing and Worthington.

The plant went through a 2002 expansion that allowed it to increase malt production by one-third, from 5 million to 7.5 million bushels.

It is one of several locations for the Milwaukee-based company, which processes barley malt for beer and food corporations. The company is owned jointly by the France-based international agribusiness corporation Lasaffre Group and Archer Daniels Midland.
